Coming to Asahikawa, the biggest surprise to us all was to find this incredible punk band, the Johnny Boys. Formed about 12 years back, they have released 2 albums, but never moved out of Asahikawa except a few small tours with some comrad punk outfits like the Star Club. I have never seen any media expose and suppose they literally are unknown apart from a small circle of punk freaks. But I should say they are like a hidden big thing in the punk scene in Japan. Once you experience their live, all of the big names of J-punks appears to be nothing comparing with these wild and hyper energetic boys. From their performance, you may imagine some influence of the Clash or Stiff lLittle Fingers as such, but the impact was so strong that none of those names come out first, but just we felt like beaten up by their tough'n'rough energy boiling out of the performance. I guess the Johnny Boys is one of the real successors of the Clash and I have to say、, without checking this band, nobody would be entitled to talk about J-punk at all. My suggestion is, if you are into punk, the reasl one, and the real thing, try and find their gig date and fly to Asahikawa or wherever they might appear and check them out. If I were living in this town, Asakhikawa, I would be following them whenever they give a gig to shoot them with my camera. The Johnny Boys do have such carisma and I do wish someday they will be treated right in the media. There might be some reasons for them to stick living in this town, but their music should be heard. |
